USCS “NIGHT OF CHAMPIONS” HONORS GRAY, MARTIN, CARVER AND STINSON

Memphis, TN – January 6, 2010 - Over $60,000 in cash and contingencies were awarded as the United Sprint Car Series (www.uscsracing.com ) honored drivers from six states during its 2009 and thirteenth anniversary USCS “Night of Champions” Awards Banquet held in the Crump-Handy banquet hall at the Holiday Inn Select Memphis-East in Memphis, Tennessee on Saturday night. A gathering of 140 people honored eighteen sprint car drivers including Terry Gray from Bartlett, Tennessee who captured his eighth USCS Outlaw Thunder Tour National Championship and USCS Asphalt Thunder Tour Champion, Blaze Martin from Valrico, Florida with his first USCS title.

Along with Gray and Martin, the top ten drivers in the final standings from the Parts Plus USCS National, Asphalt Thunder Tour, Mid South Thunder Tour and Southern Thunder Tour were recognized. Those included the 2009 Parts Plus USCS National Rookie of the Year, Justin Carver from Drummonds, Tennessee who finished a successful season in the runner-up spot in the National standings. Also honored was Parts Plus USCS Mid South Thunder Tour regional series Rookie of the Year, Jon Stinson from Memphis, Tennessee.

In addition to his eighth United Sprint Car Series National Championship in nine seasons, Terry Gray drove his Rislone Oil Stabilizer/Engine Treatment /Wendy’s Of Lexington/CnB Mushroom Farms sponsored black #10 /Wesmar Racing Engines powered J&J Auto Racing car to eleven USCS feature wins and the Championships in three out of the four Parts Plus USCS divisions during the 2009 season. The other two Championships were in the Parts Plus USCS Mid South Thunder Tour and Parts Plus USCS Southern Thunder Tour regional series. He additionally captured the USCS Speedweek 2009 title.

Gray said," We just had another good year in the Parts Plus USCS this season because of the help I got from my sponsors, my team and my Mom and Dad. It wasn’t my best season ever, but it was far from my worst. I am just thankful we finished almost every race and captured the title in three divisions.”

The eight time series Champion,competed in all forty points events and amassed a margin of 229 points for the National championship. Gray also garnered the series 2009 Ironman Award for completing the most laps of any driver during the season. Gray finished the season ranked tenth in the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame North American 360 winged sprint car driver of the year poll. The poll ranks drivers from the over 3000 competitors in winged 360 sprint cars.

Impressive eighteen year-old rookie Justin Carver, who missed one race due to tow truck problems on the way to a North Carolina race finished in the runner-up spot in the national point standings. The previous season’s Rookie of the Year, Anthony Nicholson overcame a mid-season engine failure that sidelined him for two weekends to finish in third place in the National standings followed by past series Champion, Marshall Skinner from West Memphis, Arkansas in fourth place and rookie Jon Stinson rounded out the top five drivers in the standings.

Seventeen year-old female sprint car racer, Morgan Turpen from Oakland, Tennessee finished in the sixth position in the National standings followed by two-time 2009 feature winner, Raymond Stull from Coldwater, Mississippi in seventh place. Veteran Ray Bugg from Iuka, Mississippi gathered enough points to finish eighth. Veteran sprint car driver Brad Wickham from Rutherfordton, North Carolina finished in the ninth position. Fourteen year-old rookie driver Scott Hensley from Olive Branch, Mississippi who ran a limited schedule, in preparation for a Rookie of the Year chase in 2010 rounded out the top ten drivers in the National standings.

Justin Carver garnered the coveted 2009 USCS Rookie of the Year National Championship award after finishing in second place in the National standings. Eddie Carver who worked on the #24 car of Justin Carver garnered the 2009 National Championship Crew Chief of the Year Award.

Blaze Martin from Valrico, Florida captured the Championship in the paved track Parts Plus USCS Asphalt Thunder Tour portion of the series forty -race 2009 schedule. Gray finished just sixteen points behind Martin in the paved track title chase that went down to the wire. Martin won three of four events including races at Watermelon Capital Speedway on March 29th, Ace Speedway on April 17th and Florence Motor Speedway on April 18th. Gray closed out the Asphalt Thunder Tour mini-series season with a win at famed Hickory Motor Speedway on October 3rd.

The 2008 USCS National Rookie of the Year, Anthony Nicholson also from Bartlett, Tennessee finished just twenty-one points put behind Martin in third place of the Asphalt Thunder title chase and only five points behind Gray. 2009 Rookie of the Year, Justin Carver finished just six points behind Nicholson in fourth place and 2008 Southern Thunder Rookie of the Year Jake McLain from Indian Trail, North Carolina rounded out the top five in the paved track standings.

Lee Cipray from Tampa, Florida who wrenched the #5 Asphalt Thunder Tour Championship car driven by Blaze Martin was awarded the Crew Chief of the Year honors in the paved track division. Brian Carter from Concord, North Carolina who finished in ninth place in the Asphalt Thunder point standings was honored as the Asphalt Thunder “Rookie of the Year” and his Crew Chief, Brian Butler of Concord, North Carolina was awarded as the Rookie Crew Chief of the Year for the paved track series.

In the Parts Plus USCS Mid South Thunder Tour regional series the title chase came down to the final night with Gray besting young gun Justin Carver for the Championship by a scant thirty-seven points. Past champion Marshall Skinner, who had two feature wins in the series, finished in the third position. Mid South rookie of the Year driver eighteen year-old, Jon Stinson from Memphis, Tennessee finished in the fourth position and 2008 Rookie of the Year, Anthony Nicholson finished in fifth place in the regional series point standings.

Raymond Stull who won twice at Greenville Speedway in 2009 led the next group in sixth place. Ageless veteran, Ray Bugg finished in the seventh position. Veteran sprint car racer, Bryce Vowan from Forrest City, Arkansas totaled enough points to finish eighth. Rookie driver Morgan Turpen finished in the ninth position and nineteen year-old rookie driver Casey Rowland from Nesbit, Mississippi rounded out the top ten drivers in the Mid-South Thunder final point standings. Parts Plus USCS Mid South Thunder “Crew Chief of the Year” honors went to Terry Nicholson from Bartlett, Tennessee for his work on the #16 car driven by Anthony Nicholson.

Eighteen year-old Jon Stinson was honored as the Mid South Thunder Rookie of the Year after a top four finish in the regional series points standings. Johnny Stinson who owned and was the crew chief the #26s sprint car driven by Jon Stinson was honored as the Mid South Rookie Crew Chief of the Year.

The series announced a multi-year marketing partnership with Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. That partnership includes the use of SPEC tires supplied by Goodyear Racing Tire at USCS dirt track events starting with the 2010 season. Drivers will have a burn-off period including all dirt races through July 1, 2010 to use up the previous season’s Hoosier SPEC tires. After that time Goodyear sprint car racing tires will be required on both rear wheel positions at USCS sprint car events.

The series released a fifty plus schedule of National events with forty plus races on dirt tracks and ten nights on paved surfaces. Additionally the twenty-eight night 2010 United Sprint Car Series Mid South Thunder Tour presented by Goodyear schedule of events was distributed.

Highlights on the schedule included the six race USCS Speedweek 2010. A four-race Independence Day weekend schedule of events starting on Thursday, July 1st at Riverside International Speedway through Sunday, July 4th at Camden Speedway . Additional special events include the Carolina Thunder Nationals at Carolina Speedway on October 1st and 2nd. The 4th annual Gumbo Nationals at Greenville Speedway are scheduled on November 4th through 6th . Additionally, the series announced the USCS dirt track season finale, the 2nd annual $50,000 USCS Fall Nationals featuring the $10,000 Flip Flop 50 is scheduled for November 12th and 13th at Riverside International Speedway.

Next weekend on Saturday, February 13th, the United Sprint Car will host an awards ceremony and pre-season meeting for the USCS Southern Thunder regional series in Matthews, North Carolina at Elloit’s Barbeque restaurant. Several drivers from the USCS Asphalt Thunder Tour and the drivers unable to travel the long distance to Memphis for National banquet will be honored.
